Guardiola agrees with Arteta, says City have already won trophy

Manchester City manager said that they would not go trophyless even if they did not win the FA Cup.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has rejected the suggestion that the FA Cup provided an avenue for them to avoid going trophyless.

The Cityzens advanced to the semi-final of the competition today with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth. The Premier League champions have largely struggled this season. They are out of the Champions League, they did not win the EFL Cup, and they are no longer in contention to defend their league title.

They remain alive in the FA Cup and could win a major trophy despite their struggles this season. Guardiola disagrees that it could be their only source of silverware, however, referencing their Community Shield win earlier in the season.

What Pep said

The Cityzens started the season with a triumph over their neighbours Manchester United, in the Community Shield. After a 1-1 draw in regular time, the match went into penalties and the blue half of Manchester won.

To Pep, this counts as a piece of silverware, and even if they do not go on to win the FA Cup, they cannot be said to have gone trophyless.

"We won one title already," he said, per the BBC. "We won the Community Shield; we won it. This season has been poor, nothing is going to change. It has not been good, that is not going to change.

"Last year we played in a final and could not win it. We have an incredible target to qualify for the Champions League next season and that is what we are going to try to do."

Guardiola's comments reinforced the claims of his former assistant, Mikel Arteta, who rejected the suggestion that he had won one trophy as the Arsenal manager, the FA Cup.

Arteta said that his two Community Shield titles should count two, stating that he had won three trophies for the Gunners.
