While the victory marked back-to-back wins for the first time since October, Guardiola insists Manchester City are still far from their peak form.
Guardiola insists Manchester City are not back yet
Speaking after the emphatic win at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola downplayed suggestions that City had rediscovered their dominant style, despite Erling Haaland’s double and Savinho’s impressive performance.
The win brought the reigning champions within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea and moved them to sixth in the Premier League table.
After the game, Guardiola told reporters, “You judge the results. We’ve seen our level over many years. We’re not at that level right now. Against Everton, we played much better than today, and we drew — big crisis, disaster.”
Guardiola also praised individual performances, such as Kevin De Bruyne’s full 90 minutes, calling it a positive step for the injury-prone midfielder, but still explained that there were areas that needed improvement in the team.
Guardiola looks to January transfer window
Despite the recent upturn in results, Guardiola’s comments indicate that Manchester City are still looking to make moves in the transfer market.
With Manchester City’s veteran midfielder de Bruyne out of contract in June and his future uncertain, Guardiola will likely look to reinforce the squad with signings in the January window to start the replacement process.
Additionally, with the Cityzens’ defensive vulnerabilities exposed earlier in the season, January signings could also be key to stopping a repeat of the downward spiral that happened when several defenders suffered injuries.
Given Guardiola’s comments, fans can expect the club to be active in January, as Manchester City look to bolster their squad and salvage what is left of their season.
