AFCON U-23 Guinea coach banks on home-based players to beat Nigeria

Guinea will battle Nigeria Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifiers in March.

The head coach of Guinea U-23, Morlaye Cisse, has revealed his team that will play Nigeria for the side’s 2023 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifiers will be made up of home-based players.

Olympic Eagles players

The team has already started preparation for the encounter slated for later in the year, in March.

He has 21 players from Guinea preparing ahead of the clash against the Olympic Eagles.

According to him, “The objective is to have a solid base from Conakry with a team of 22 even 25 or 30 players and at any time we can rely on these players.

“Since there is always a last-minute disappointment from foreign-based players, and we have to avoid being surprised at the last minute by foreign players,” he told Africsport.

Journey to last round of Qualification

Guinea advanced to this stage without playing a match following the withdrawal of its opponent, Uganda.

Uganda withdraws from the competition a few days before the commencement of the qualifying stage.

On the other hand, the Olympic Eagles defeated the Serengeti Boys of Tanzania, played a 1-1 draw away, and sealed the victory at the Lekan salami stadium in Ibadan 2-0 to record a 3-1 aggregate.

The overall winners will qualify for the U-23 AFCON, which will be hosted by Morocco in November 2023.
