After winning the battle against cancer, Haller is back on the pitch and showed how dangerous he can be with a hat trick against Basel
Borussia Dortmund’s Ivorian forward Sebastian Haller scored a seven-minute hat trick in his second match back from battling cancer to help the club to a 6-0 win over Swiss club Basel.
Haller is truly back!
Haller came on with 30 minutes left to play, and with Dortmund already 3-0 up, and stamped his authority on the match with a brilliant treble.
The first goal, a penalty in the 81st minute, which was Haller’s first goal since he returned to action was followed by an emotional moment with all his teammates joining him in celebrating the goal.
He quickly added a second with a deft finish from a Julian Brandt cross, and completed his hattrick with a sweeping finish from a corner kick in the 88th minute, wrapping up a perfect cameo.
Haller finally in line for competitive debut soon
Haller’s hat trick comes just over six months after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and was forced to sit out all of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season so far.
He now has a chance to return to competitive action with Dortmund after two surgeries and chemotherapy helped him win the battle agains cancer.
Haller only resumed training in the new year, but o the evidence of the Basell outing, it will not be long before Dortmund can finally call on their €31 million summer signing to make his competitive debut for the club.
Their first chance to do so will come when the Bundesliga resumes on the 22nd of January and Dortmund host Augsburg looking to improve their league position of sixth in the Bundesliga.
