Harambee Stars' captain aims for strong away performances as Kenya begins its 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification journey.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is gearing up for a promising start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as Kenya prepares to face Gabon in Franceville on Thursday.

As part of their preparations, Kenya has engaged in a series of friendly matches this year, with their most recent outing resulting in an exciting 2-2 draw against Russia.

Olunga, a pivotal figure in the Harambee Stars line up, emphasized the importance of a strong start in the group opener against Gabon.

"Of course, we know they are a good side, and they are playing at home with home supporters, but the boys have prepared quite well. We are ready for the big game and are optimistic about a positive result," said Olunga

"We played some good friendlies in preparation for this, and now the serious games begin. The mood in camp is quite good, and the boys are prepared both physically and mentally.

"We know they are not going to be an easy side, but with these kinds of games, you have to win them if you want to qualify for the World Cup. So, we are going to give our best against Gabon, and we hope we will make Kenya proud," Olunga stated.

Olunga, who plies his trade as the leading hit-man for Al Duhail in Qatar, will be expected to spearhead the Harambee Stars' attack in the crucial clash against Gabon.

In their recent friendly encounter against Russia, it was Anthony Akumu and Masud Juma who found the back of the net for Kenya, scoring in the 16th and 36th minutes, respectively.

The Engin Firat-coached side departed for Libreville on Wednesday morning as the Harambee Stars embarked on their mission to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The highly anticipated clash against Gabon will be played at Stade de Franceville, with kickoff time set at 7 PM, before clashing with Seychelles just four days later in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Kenya has been drawn into Group F of the qualifiers, where they will face formidable opponents in Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Gambia, Burundi, and Seychelles.
