Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has given an insight into what he expects from Kenya’s rivals Burundi during Friday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat expects Burundi to play a counter attacking game when the two sides clash in their 2026 World Cup qualifier on Friday.
Kenya will take on Burundi in the first of their two World Cup qualifiers at the Bingu National Stadium Lilongwe, Malawi with either team seeing the match as a must win.
Firat plans to employ a cautious approach against the Swallows with an emphasis on getting the balance right between defence and attack so that their rivals do not hit them on the break.

Harambee Stars: Five reasons why switching to a back three formation makes a lot of sense for Kenya ahead of AFCON 2027
Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has been hinting at switching to a back three formation for a while now, and here are five reasons why his thoughts make alot of sense.
“We are facing a rival that has a very strong transition game, they play very fast from deep, they have a lot of fast players. Therefore, I feel they will use the space they can get if we press them and to try and get long balls behind our defence but we are prepared for it,” Firat said on Thursday.
The Turkish tactician is, however, confident of securing maximum points from the match which will greatly boost his side’s World Cup qualification hopes before they face the Ivory Coast on Tuesday.
“I never give up and the boys also do not give up. Our focus is on the boys we have here to try our best to get the three points,” he added.

Firat reveals ambitous targets for Harambee Stars after as preparations intensify in Malawi
Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has revealed his side's ambitious targets ahead of Kenya's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and Cote d'Ivoire.
The match will take place on Friday afternoon with Kenya playing their home matches away owing to a lack of an approved stadium back home.
Nonetheless, the squad is brimming with confidence ahead of the major test that awaits them. Kenya, just like Burundi, have three points from their first two matches, following a 5-0 defeat of Seychelles, and a 2-1 loss in Gabon, while their rivals beat the Gambia and lost to the Gabonese.
