Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu has returned to full fitness but was left on the bench for his club Reims’ Ligue 1 clash against Montpellier which they won big to move to fourth place.

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu watched proceedings from the bench as his club Stade de Reims claimed a 4-2 victory against Montpellier in the French league on Sunday.

Okumu, who has recently returned from injury, was hoping to be involved in the league match but coach Luka Elsner opted for the central defensive partnership of Ivorians Emmanuel Agbadou and Cedric Kipre who have been playing together in recent matches.

It was the sixth match in which Reims have not lost, having won four and draw two over that period, and it was a second straight victory that leaves them fourth on the table.

Reims went ahead when Zimbabwean Marshall Munetsi rose to meet Oumar Diakite’s cross with a header after six minutes before Japanese Keito Nakamura extended their lead in the 25th minute.

However, Arnaud Nordin reduced the arrears for Montpellier in the 37th minute for 2-1 in favour of the home side at halftime.

After the break, Diakite and Nakamura combined, the former heading home the latter’s perfectly-weighted pass for 3-1 and it looked like it would stay that way until the final when but there were late goals from both sides.

There was a scare for Reims as Nordin pulled one back for Montpellier in the 91st minute but Falaye Sacko’s handled the ball a minute later to give Reims a penalty which was converted by Teddy Teuma.

Okumu, who had been sidelined with a groin injury, missed his side’s last two matches but returned to full training this week ahead of Sunday’s match.

The defender will now link up with his Harambee Stars colleagues ahead of Kenya’s crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Cameroon.
