Vyner was instrumental in helping Bristol City keep their Premier League promotion hopes alive as they beat Preston 3-1 on Saturday, while Jonah Ayunga also featured in Scotland.

Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner played a pivotal role in Bristol City's 3-1 victory over Preston in a fiercely contested SkyBet Championship match on Saturday afternoon.

The Kenyan international, who was called up for the upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Burundi and Ivory Coast last June, showcased his defensive prowess as he anchored the right side of a back three.

Despite receiving a booking, Vyner's contributions included two critical clearances, two blocked shots, and an interception that proved crucial in maintaining his side's edge.

Bristol City's win was secured through a combination of resilience and sharp attacking play, starting with a controversial opener.

Yu Hirakawa pounced on a defensive mix-up and slotted the ball past Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, albeit with what appeared to be a handball. The referee allowed the goal to stand, sparking frustration among the home supporters. Further goals from Nahki Wells and Max Bird ensured Bristol City left Deepdale with all three points.

Preston fought valiantly, equalizing early in the second half through Sam Greenwood’s expertly taken free-kick—his third goal in as many games.

However, their joy was short-lived as Wells swiftly responded, heading in his fourth goal of the season from Mark Sykes' cross just two minutes later. As Preston pushed for a second equalizer, substitute Max Bird put the result beyond doubt with a composed left-footed strike after combining cleverly with Hirakawa, sending the visiting fans into celebration.

The win moved Liam Manning’s Bristol City to eighth place in the Championship table, only two points shy of the playoff spots. Preston, on the other hand, slipped to 20th, experiencing their first home defeat since their opening game of the season against Sheffield United in August.

Vyner’s Growing Influence and Call-Up for Kenya

Vyner's standout performance comes as he prepares to join the Harambee Stars for their crucial World Cup qualifying matches.

His solid display at Deepdale not only bolstered Bristol City's defense but also underlined why his presence will be vital for Kenya’s backline in their quest to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.

Elsewhere in Scotland

Meanwhile, in Scottish Premiership action, Jonah Ayunga featured off the bench for St. Mirren in their 0-0 stalemate with Ross County.

Despite playing only the second half, Ayunga's link-up play added dynamism to St. Mirren's attack. He managed one shot on target and delivered a key pass that, on another day, might have led to a breakthrough. His efforts, however, did not yield the decisive goal as both sides settled for a share of the points.
