Zimbabwe have appointed a new head coach for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers aiming to usher in a new era.

Harambee Stars opponents in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Zimbabwe, have appointed Michael Nees as their new head coach.

The German tactician takes over the reins as the substantive head coach following the departure of the previous coach Zdravko Logarusic.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) expressed their enthusiasm about Nees's appointment through a recent statement.

"The Zimbabwe Football Association is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Nees as the new head coach of the Zimbabwe Men’s National Team. The 57-year-old German will lead the Warriors in their quest for success in the AFCON 2025 and FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers," the statement read.

ZIFA believes that Nees’s extensive background in coaching and sports science will bring innovative strategies and a new level of success to the team.

"ZIFA is confident that Michael Nees’s appointment will usher in a new era of success for the Warriors. His vast experience, combined with his innovative coaching style, makes him the ideal candidate to lead our national team to new heights," they added.

Michael Nees holds a UEFA Pro Licence and an M.A. degree in Sports Science, Performance Physiology, and Ethnology from the University of Heidelberg.

His coaching career spans several countries and roles, from being a technical advisor in Japan to a head coach in Rwanda, and later a technical director in South Africa and Kosovo.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for the Zimbabwe national team, which is set to compete in a challenging Group J in the AFCON qualifiers alongside Cameroon, Namibia, and Kenya.

Nees's first major test will be leading Zimbabwe against Kenya, known as the Harambee Stars, on September 2nd, followed by a match against Namibia on September 10th.

In an interview, Nees shared his enthusiasm for his new role.

“I will guide the national team with dedication and professionalism, and work to achieve a winning Zimbabwe that can make the nation proud," he said.

Analysts see Nees's appointment as a strategic move by Zimbabwe to stabilize their team dynamics and enhance their tactical play.

The upcoming matches against Kenya and Namibia will not only test the Warriors' readiness but also showcase Nees’s impact on the team.
