Marseille are nearing the completion of Mason Greenwood’s signing from Manchester United but the city mayor, Benoit Payan, is not impressed by the move, believing it to be bad for the image of his jurisdiction.

Manchester United negotiating Greenwood's sale to raise money for Osimhen’s transfer
According to reports, Manchester United are negotiating a deal with Marseille to sell Mason Greenwood as they look to fund Victor Osimhen’s transfer move.
Despite having the charges dropped and even being purported to be innocent by a Manchester United statement, the club thought it better he spent time away; hence, he was sent out on loan to Getafe in LALIGA last season.
He has returned for preseason this summer; however, they do not seem interested in returning him to the fold, as they have been actively listening to offers for him.
The striker is now close to joining Marseille after Manchester United accepted a €30 million financial package, including a percentage sell-on clause.
What Marseille's Mayor said
The city administrative head, who is also a Les Phoceens fan, disapproves of the signing of Greenwood, stating that their club should not be associated with an alleged abuser.
“Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable,” Payan said, per GFFN. Hitting his wife... I saw images that deeply shocked me. Massacring his wife in this way is unbecoming of a man and he cannot have his place on this team.”
“The values of OM and Marseille are anything but that in fact. It’s a shame. I will ask Pablo Longoria not to recruit Greenwood. I don’t want my club to be covered with the shame of someone who hits his wife.”
