Emiliano Martinez has backed five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi to lead Argentina in the 2026 World Cup.
Messi led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and won the trophy for his country, being the second-highest goal scorer in the tournament.
The World Cup winner was also part of the squad that won the Copa America in 2021 earlier this year.
Martinez thinks Messi may have one more World Cup left in him, despite the consensus that Qatar was his final World Cup.

Martinez on Messi
Emi Martinez is adamant that Lionel Messi, who turns 39 during the competition, can lead Argentina to a World Cup triumph in two years.
According to Daily Mail, Martinez said, “I think he will go year after year and see how he feels. I still think he has got the power to go to the World Cup.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper claimed that the World Cup winner still has the strength to lead Argentina again.
Meanwhile, Messi became the most decorated player in history by leading Argentina to consecutive Copa America championships.
Now that Dani Alves has been surpassed, Lionel Messi holds the record for most trophies won in the history of the game.
In the early hours of Monday morning, the Argentina captain won his 45th career championship as his team defeated Colombia 1-0 in the 2024 Copa América final.
