'I want to enjoy' — Cristiano Ronaldo hungry to emulate Messi achievement before retirement
Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up on his plans for retirement as he approaches his 40th birthday.
What Ronaldo said
During the recent Globe Soccer Awards, in which Ronaldo was named the Middle Eastern Player of the Year and handed
Top Goalscorer of All Time award, the Portugal international ruffled some feathers.
He praised his current hunting ground, the Saudi Pro League, and drew comparisons with Ligue 1, stating that the football in the Gulf was of a higher quality.
“Saudi League is better than Ligue 1, of course. France only has PSG. The rest are finished. Try to sprint in 38, 39, or 40-degree weather and see…”
What Petit said
Former World Champion for France, Petit, who spent a huge chunk of his career playing for Monaco in Ligue 1, responded to Ronaldo’s comments, stating that it was a mere play at mainstream relevance and a shot at his eternal rival, Messi, who spent two seasons in the French top flight.
“I’m not surprised. Since 2018, when Cristiano left Real Madrid, he has had more interviews than collective trophies,” he said, per GFFN.
“He has had very little impact on club and country. He is an ambassador of the Globe (Soccer) awards, and I think he can’t deal with the fact that he is not the headliner of the biggest football awards (Ballon d’Or) anymore.
“His comments about Ligue 1 are baseless and are related to Messi, and we all know that.”
