Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani has explained his relief at missing out on signing Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.

Angelo Fabiani has expressed relief at not signing former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, describing him as a "mercenary".

Greenwood joined Marseille last month for £30million after a year on loan at Getafe, following sexual assault accusations that led to his departure from Manchester United.

Fabiani revealed that Lazio had considered signing Greenwood last year, but ultimately decided against it due to his off-field issues.

Latest Marseille superstar, Mason Greenwood pens his new deal.

"We wanted Greenwood last year, then there was a hitch with the player - you all know what Greenwood's problem was," he told Lazio club media.

When Greenwood's agent approached Lazio again this year, they offered £22m for 50% of the player, but he chose to join Marseille instead. Lotito stated,

"He preferred to take another path and I say that the best deals are those that aren't made.

Fabiani emphasized his preference for players who are committed to the team, citing Nicolo Rovella and Mattia Zaccagni as examples. "I don't want these mercenaries," he said.

“If he’s taken another path, we wish Greenwood the best of luck.”

Greenwood netted his first Marseille goal this week in a friendly against second-tier side Pau FC.
