Fenerbahce 1-3 Galatasaray: Victor Osimhen and Mertens recreate iconic Napoli celebration against Mourinho
Nigeria's Victor Osimhen and Dries Mertens rolled back the years in Napoli for Galatasaray against Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce in the super derby.
Mertens happy with Osimhen’s transfer
Speaking after the Istanbul derby, Dries Mertens was full of admiration for Osimhen and expressed happiness that, on deadline day last month, he decided to join Galatasaray instead of moving to Chelsea or Al-Ahli.
According to Galatasaray's official website, Mertens said, "Frankly, I am very happy that he came here. He is an incredible player, I know he can do even better, we will see that in the future.
“However, it is a great advantage for him to join us. He did not have a good preparation period, but he is a very important player for us and I think he will go to better places.”
Before the Belgian moved to Galatasaray in August 2022, Osimhen and Mertens played together at Napoli for two years, during which time they developed a flawless knowledge of one another.
The Nigerian and Belgian have combined for three goals in the 36 games they have played together. Mertens assisted Osimhen once, and the 2018 World Cup star's two goals were assisted by the current African Footballer of the Year.
Osimhen's assist against Fenerbahce was his first in back-to-back assist since September 2019.
