Pep Guardiola was brutal in his assessment of a struggling Manchester City star after their draw against Manchester United.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola criticised Matheus Nunes for not being clever enough to play in midfield, suggesting that the 26-year-old stood more chance of having a successful career at right-back.
The Portugal international joined the Cityzens in the summer of 2023 as a highly-rated €62 million signing. At the time, Guardiola spoke so glowingly about him, calling him one of the best players in the world.

What Guardiola said
This season, this Spanish tactician has experimented with Nunes at right back, and in a recent press conference, he stated that could be the permanent position for the former Sporting star, as he interprets the midfield role inadequately.
"He can become a good right-back for the physicality,” Pep said. “I think he's not a player to play in the middle because he's not clever enough in composure.
“He has incredible skills and he's learning a lot; full-backs always have a big mistake when a cross to the far post where you are, always they're sleeping.

"He defended really well two or three crosses from Bruno Fernandes, [Patrick] Dorgu. He has physicality to do it; he can play that position and he's helped a lot.
“When we started the season and I tell we're going to play Matheus at right-back, Nico [O'Reilly] left-back, you'd tell me, 'What are you talking about?' But the season is what it is."
Regardless of what Pep decides to do with Nunes, however, Manchester City are expected to sign a midfielder in the summer given the impending exit of Kevin de Bruyne. As Pulse Sports reported, they are the current frontrunners to land Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, as they view him as an ideal replacement for the Belgian.
