Kakamega Homeboyz have opened the door for Patrick Matasi to return to the team after a court lifted his suspension over match-fixing allegations.
Kakamega Homeboyz are set to welcome back goalkeeper Patrick Matasi following the lifting of his suspension by the High Court.
Matasi got a reprieve when a Kakamega court lifted a 90-day suspension that was imposed on him by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over match-fixing allegations.
Justice S.N Mbungi, sitting at the Kakamega High Court on Tuesday, halted the decision to ban Matasi and gave FKF 30 days to respond to the petition, after the player filed a petition, while setting June 4 as the hearing date.

Matasi had been handed the suspension on March 27, pending investigations into the claims, after a video emerged online where a man believed to be him was seen and heard getting instruction from an unidentified man, who was allegedly issuing instructions to him to manipulate a match.

Mohammed Bajaber given Harambee Stars warning after dream debut under Benni McCarthy
Mohammed Bajaber has become a cult hero after his starring role for Harambee Stars in March and he has been told what he must do to remain in the plans of coach Benni McCarthy.
The man was heard coercing the player to let in goals at certain times during an unknown match while promising payment if the job was executed well.
What has Homeboyz said over Matasi?
)
Following the court’s decision, Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula says the club have no option but to allow the goalkeeper back and it will be up to coach Francis Baraza and his technical team to decide if and when to field him.
“I received the court order today (Wednesday) and I did the effort to enquire with the court whether it was genuine, and the court has responded that it is a genuine court order, and as a club, who respects the rule of law in the country, we don’t have any option than to accept Matasi back in our squad,” Shimanyula told Flashscore.
“Matasi decided to fight his own war (against FKF decision to suspended him), Homeboyz was not involved, and he is free now to play, we can’t go against the court order, we have to respect it, and it is upon the coach to see whether he is fit enough to be involved starting now.

Former Tottenham youth prospect bids to make history with Kenya at U-20 AFCON
Obiero, who arrived in the Rising Stars camp earlier this week, will be hoping to make the final 21-man squad for the upcoming tournament.
“Immediately FKF had suspended him, we moved to stop his salary from going through, but now that he has a court order reinstating him, we have reopened his salary, and he will start getting monthly payments as the rest of the squad members.”
Shimanyula further hit out at FKF for what he terms a rush to punish the player without sufficient evidence.
“I knew it from the first day when I watched the viral match-fixing video, I knew FKF were not sure about what they were trying to do, I knew FKF didn’t have enough evidence and that is why the court has made the decision to overturn their sanctions and further ordered those with evidence of Matasi fixing matches to produce them in the same court,” added the Homeboyz boss.
When is Matasi likely to return to action?
)
“FKF just wanted to punish Matasi for nothing, I don’t want to look like I am defending the player for his ills if any, but what evidence did they use to take the decision (ban him from activities)? What we saw was a video circulating which up until now, Matasi says he is not the one being interviewed, and doesn’t have any knowledge about it.”

Why Shujaa face World Sevens Series relegation despite reaching cup final in Singapore
Kenya Sevens had an impressive Singapore Sevens leg, where they reached the cup final, but that was not enough as they still stare at the prospect of World Sevens Series relegation.
FKF had sought help from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations as well as FIFA and CAF to help determine the authenticity of the video before the goalkeeper went to court.
The court order is yet another reminder of the weak legislation around match-fixing as there is no law that criminalises the vice, which is now rampant in Kenyan football.
Matasi will now be available for selection for Kakamega Homeboyz in their FKF Cup Round of 16 clash against Shabana FC on Saturday, April 12.
