"I'd like Pep (Guardiola) to be honest. I think England now have to strive for the best managers and Pep would be great the way he gets teams playing," Rooney told Sky Sports.

Rooney who is a former Everton teammate of Carsley, praised the coaching abilities of England's new interim boss and his potential to step up to the senior role.

"I think Lee Carsley deserves his opportunity. I played with Lee at Everton when we were both younger and he's a very good person, but I think he's a really good coach," Rooney added.

Carsley, who has enjoyed significant success with the England Under-21s, including winning last summer's European Championship, has been handed the reins temporarily to oversee the Nations League matches against Ireland and Finland in September.

The FA has hinted that Carsley's interim role could extend beyond those fixtures, allowing him to stake a claim for the permanent position.

His coaching credentials have been widely praised by young players, with Harvey Elliott, Rico Lewis, and Anthony Gordon all singing his praises.

Lee Carsley himself expressed his pride at being appointed interim manager. He said: "It's an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis.

"As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager," he said.

The FA's chief executive, Mark Bullingham, "Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level.

"He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the UEFA Nations League games ahead."

As the search for a permanent successor to Southgate continues, Carsley will be hoping to make a strong impression in the interim role and potentially position himself as a leading candidate for the job.
