Romero gave away a needless penalty when he fouled Cody Gakpo to put his side 3-0 down after 15 minutes played.

Cristian Romero is under fire following Tottenham Hotspur’s late 4-3 defeat to Liverpool after making two mistakes during the course of the match.

Spurs went 3-0 down to the Merseyside-based outfit in the opening 15 minutes of the game, with Romero first giving away a needless penalty after fouling Cody Gakpo just inside the box for the third goal converted by Mohammed Salah.

There was a glimpse of hope for Spurs late in the second half when Harry Kane scored. Oliver Skipp played a good ball down the left for Ivan Perisic, and Liverpool looked stretched. Virgil van Dijk failed to stop the Croatian, who found Kane, who managed a shot past Alisson Becker.

Spurs scored their second goal in the 77th minute through Son Heung Min, before Richarlison equalized for the Lillywhites in the third minute of added time after he met a free-kick delivered by Son.

However, the Reds fought back, and Jota scored the fourth in injury time. A minute after the away side had found an equalizer, Diogo Jota slipped in and fired a low cross past Forster into the bottom right corner.

However, critics were quick to call out Romero for his part in Tottenham’s defeat, with Souness even saying “he cost his team three points”.

‘’When you see someone regularly go into the ground, it is because he is not reading the game;” Graeme Souness said, “"Romero cost them two points," he added.

Jamie Redknapp revealed he was worried about the World Cup winner’s sudden tendency to be “rash” with his defending.

‘When he first got into the team, I thought he was calm and composed, but there is something that seems to have triggered his mind of late.He goes after the ball and runs into areas,” he said.

‘When you are rash, you make it difficult for the players besides you because they have no Idea what you are going to do as a defender. Good defenders understand each other,”

“He is not thinking about his teammates right now. He is just trying to look good. Sometimes fans misinterpret it looking good by showing aggression and ‘he is trying to win the ball back’. That is not aggression. You let your teammates down today.”
