Barnsley coach Darrell Clarke has expressed concerns about the fitness levels of Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali, explaining why the Super Eagles star has yet to make an appearance for the club since his summer move.

After being unable to make his mark at Arsenal following a 2016 move, the Nigerian midfielder has made several lower-level moves in recent years, including spells in the Spanish second division and Portuguese lower leagues.

Now at Barnsley, Nwakali was expected to fit seamlessly into the squad as he enters his peak, but the 25-year-old has yet to play a single minute.

Speaking on Nwakali’s lack of game time, Barnsley coach, Clarke noted, “Kelechi is a mile off. He needs to do what I’ve told him to do.
“He needs to get fitter, more high-speed distance running. But he’s adapting to the English game again. We will keep working with him.”
Nwakali will be hoping to find the right fitness levels soon to help his side, who were recently battered 7-0 by Manchester United.

The four-time Super Eagles star will need to act quickly before he loses his place in the team and the manager’s confidence, which could see him shipped off to a new club again.
