Manchester United icon Jaap Stam has issued a strong statement regarding Erik ten Hag's future at the club, insisting that the Dutchman should leave the Red Devils.

Stam, who had a stellar career at Old Trafford, delivered a harsh critique of Ten Hag’s style of football during his time as Manchester United's manager.

Ten Hag still in Manchester United hot seat

Stam’s comments come after a turbulent season for Manchester United, as despite finishing third in his debut campaign, Ten Hag's second season was marred by off-field controversies involving players like Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, as well as inconsistent performances on the pitch.

Manchester United's disappointing campaign saw them finish bottom of their Champions League group for the first time in nearly 20 years and endure their worst-ever Premier League finish, leading to a lack of faith in the Dutchman’s methods.

Although Ten Hag managed to secure the FA Cup, which ultimately saved him from being sacked by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Stam believes that his compatriot’s drab style of play does not bode well for the club's future.

Stam comments on Ten Hag’s future

Stam shared his thoughts on Ten Hag’s tenure during an interview on Simon Jordan’s William Hill podcast, Up Front with Simon Jordan saying, "I think he needs to go. I think it's good he signed a new contract because he still needs that little bit of help.

“He needs to look at himself and how last season panned out. I don't always agree with him in terms of him saying they played good football."

The former central defender continued his criticism of Ten Hag’s approach, saying, "As a manager, you need to be positive about your players, but it's also good to just be honest and say that your team played rubbish football.

"He needs to step up this season. There have been a lot of changes made at the club with the staff, so I'm curious how it's going to work out for them."

Ten Hag’s Red Devils will open the 2024/25 Premier League season and will be looking to do better than their 8th-place finish, starting with their match against Fulham on Friday.
