Benzema shocking exit

While Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr was certainly more sensational, it was understandable, as the Portuguese was past his prime.

Benzema, however, moved to the Gulf as a Ballon d'Or winner at the peak of his powers. Hence, his decision has been criticised by many, some of whom accused him of a cash grab.

He joined Nadi Al-Sha'ab on a two-year deal in the summer of 2023 worth about €200 million a season. Despite the incredible figures involved in the deal, Benzema’s motivation was beyond financial.

What Benzema said

In a recent interview, the France international explained that he wanted to leave the club on a high. Also, leaving to another European club was not on the cards for him, as he did not want to play against Real Madrid.

“My decision to go to Saudi Arabia was also because I wanted to leave Real Madrid on top,” Benzema revealed, per Fabrizio Romano “And I didn’t want to ever play against Real Madrid in my life.”

He went on to reveal his conversation with Fiorentino Perez after making his decision to leave, explaining that he believed the youngsters at the club were ready to take up the mantle.

“Florentino Perez was the first person I called when I decided to leave Real Madrid. He didn't quite understand... I told him that the young stars, Vinicius and Rodrygo, were ready.”
