Nigeria appoints Eric Chelle as new head coach

Nigeria has appointed Eric Chelle as its new head coach, and it has assigned him the task of reviving its faltering 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The 47-year-old, brings international experience to the role, having recently managed Mali for two years. He led Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they were narrowly defeated by hosts Ivory Coast.

Born in Abidjan, Chelle represented Mali as a player, earning five caps. His club career was spent in France, most notably with Lens.

Nigeria's World Cup qualifying journey resumes in March with an away fixture against Rwanda, followed by a home game against Zimbabwe.

The Super Eagles currently sit in a precarious position in Group C, having earned only three points from their first four matches. They trail Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin, all of whom have seven points.

The qualifying format sees the top team from each of the nine African groups automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
