Phil Foden came under heavy criticism from former Manchester United captain Roy Keane after another disappointing performance in England’s World Cup qualifier against Albania.
The Manchester City midfielder, who won the PFA Player of the Year award last season, has struggled to meet expectations. He failed to make an impact during England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, even though he was given a free role in the team.
Foden has also been inconsistent for City this season, apart from a strong run in January when he scored six goals in four games. However, since scoring against Chelsea, the 24-year-old has failed to find the net in 12 matches for club and country, managing just one assist during that stretch.

Keane questions Foden’s place in the England team
)
Keane did not hold back in his assessment of Foden’s performance in the 1-0 win over Albania. The former Manchester United star suggested that if Foden does not improve, he could find himself out of England’s plans under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
"Listen, Foden won’t have to worry about where he wants to play because he won’t be playing. That’s a bigger problem for him," Keane said on ITV Sports.
The Irishman also criticized Marcus Rashford, who had another quiet game for England.
"You’ve got a new manager, and you want to make a good impression. Rashford and Foden certainly didn’t do that tonight," Keane added.
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright shared Keane’s opinion, suggesting that Foden and Rashford were lucky to be included in the England squad based on their current form.
"Those two are fortunate to be called up, given how things are going for them right now," Wright said.
He also pointed out that their poor performances could open the door for other wingers to step up.
"If I were another English winger watching that, I’d be thinking, ‘I need to raise my game because there’s an opportunity here,’" he added.
England will have one more match during this international break, a World Cup qualifier at Wembley against Latvia.
