Jordan Henderson may lose out on millions from Saudi Arabia move without receiving a dime
In a surprising turn of events, Jordan Henderson, the former Liverpool skipper, has not received any payment from his high-profile stint at Al-Ettifaq.
Merchandise Frenzy: Henderson Mania Hits Ajax Fans
Ajax fans are showing their enthusiasm for their new star in a big way. Henderson's number six jersey, priced at a steep £85, is flying off the shelves, becoming the club's top-selling shirt ever. But it's not just the jersey that's catching fans' attention.
The Ajax store is brimming with Henderson-themed merchandise, ranging from bedsheets and towels to pillows and mugs, all adorned with his name and the iconic number six. This merchandise mania is a testament to Henderson's popularity and the excitement he's brought to Ajax's fanbase.
On-Field Expectations and Financial Gambles
Henderson's arrival at Ajax is not without its challenges. With the team struggling in fifth place in the league, 23 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, the pressure is on for him to make an immediate impact.
However, columnist Valentijn Driessen expresses skepticism in De Telegraaf: "All signals are on red, but Ajax is just pushing hard and reaching deep into their pockets for midfielder Jordan Henderson," he notes, describing the transfer as a 'panic buy'.
Driessen continues, "A case of buying for which the fallen Ajax has to write off about 25 million euros (£21.4m) in two and a half years. Panic buying can also be successful, but Henderson is past his peak after three years at Sunderland, twelve years at Liverpool and a half a year at Al-Ettifaq."
The financial intricacies of Henderson's deal are also under scrutiny. He deferred his payments for the last six months, with speculation that this move was for tax purposes, tied to his potential return to the UK and England's national team. Under UK law, spending more than 90 days in the country makes one a tax resident.
