Arsenal icon Martin Keown has criticised a Manchester United player following the club's defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Martin Keown has slammed Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt following the club's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur

The former Arsenal defender believes that De Ligt has not lived up to expectations since joining United from Bayern Munich for £42.9m last summer.

Keown described De Ligt's performances as "robotic" and criticised his decision-making, claiming that he "creates issues for the team".

He also suggested that manager Ruben Amorim needs to do more to boost the defender's confidence.

“Look at De Ligt, the amount of money they spent on him by the way is almost obscene for a centre half,' Keown said of the £42.9 million defender on talkSPORT. “He’s playing like a robot.

“There’s times he can clear the ball and he puts it out for a corner. He just creates issues for the team. Ruben Amorim needs to empower him with confidence, I’m not seeing any of that with him.”

Keown's assessment is similar to those made by former United midfielder Paul Scholes, who has also been critical of the Dutchman this season.

“He was brilliant at Ajax, he seems to be getting worse as he gets older,” Scholes said on The Overlap Fan Debate. “Bayern Munich, Juventus, they've let him go for some reason.

“Where are your ambitions? I’m talking about getting a team to win the Premier League. Are you going to win the Premier League with De Ligt and (Leny) Yoro as your centre-halves?”

What next for Manchester United?

Amorim’s 15th-placed side face Everton in 14th on February 22, seeking to leapfrog the in-form Toffees in the Premier League table.
