The Italian Referees' Association announced that Serie A is set for a groundbreaking moment this weekend with the first-ever all-female refereeing team taking charge of a match.

The crew will officiate the clash between Inter Milan and Torino at the iconic San Siro stadium. Inter are still celebrating their recent Serie A title win, secured with a victory over city rivals AC Milan earlier this week.

Leading the officiating team will be 33-year-old Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, who is already a trailblazer in Italian football. She became Serie A's first female referee in 2022 and this weekend's match marks her sixth Serie A assignment this season.

This news comes shortly after Rebecca Welch became the first female referee in the Premier League in December.

Inter's Dominant Season

Inter Milan are riding high after clinching the Scudetto (Serie A title) with a decisive 2-1 win over AC Milan. Manager Simone Inzaghi has brought them back to the top after two consecutive seasons without the title.

Their impressive form is highlighted by the fact that only Bayer Leverkusen boasts a better points-per-game record across Europe's top five leagues currently.

Inter's dominance is undeniable as they have only lost one Serie A match all season and have amassed a staggering 86 points in 33 games, leaving their city rivals AC Milan 17 points behind.

This victory also secured their 20th Serie A title, earning them the right to display a second star on their badge - each star signifies ten titles won.

While Caputi, Di Monte, and Trasciatti make history as the on-field team, Serie A has assigned male officials for the fourth official and VAR roles. Matteo Marchetti will be the fourth official, with Aleandro Di Paolo and Gianluca Aureliano in the VAR booth.
