The Nyanza County hopes to host internationa events at the facility.

Homa Bay Stadium is set for a grand opening ceremony that will be graced by Gor Mahia and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The construction of the sporting facility was facilitated by the county government, and after its completion, it is now set to be opened on June 30.

Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions Gor Mahia are set to play a local team during the opening ceremony, while Odinga will be the chief guest. The former Lang'ata Member of Parliament is a known sports enthusiast and supports K'Ogalo.

"We don’t just want to be known for local matches; we need to be counted among the counties that can host international games as well," Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said, according to a local publication.

The county chief was speaking during a ceremony to open Acakoro Sports Academy at Kome village, Kanyamwa Kosewe Ward, in Ndhiwa Constituency.

According to Wanga, the county is positioning itself in order to be part of the counties that will host Africa Cup of Nations events should the Pamoja bid be successful. Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya have made a joint bid, known as Pamoja, to host the AFCON Finals in 2027.

Should the three nations win the bid, it would be the first to be hosted within the CECAFA region. The CECAFA nations have also never won the continental trophy, and a chance to host it will give them home advantage as they take a shot at the trophy.
