Fulham missed an opportunity to secure three points at Craven Cottage as they were held to a dramatic draw by relegation-threatened Ipswich Town, opening the Nigerian to heavy criticism.

Bassey’s error sparks Ipswich opener

The match got off to a rocky start for Fulham when Bassey’s failed clearance allowed Ipswich to take an early lead.

After a dangerous delivery from Athan Broadhead led to Antonee Robinson inadvertently heading the ball against his own crossbar, Bassey’s poor clearance handed Sammie Szmodics the opportunity to smash a volley into the back of the net for Ipswich’s opener.

Fulham equalised in the second half through Raul Jimenez’s penalty, but Ipswich quickly regained their lead with a spot kick of their own, converted by Liam Delap.

The home side ultimately salvaged a point thanks to another late penalty from Jimenez, but the performance left much to be desired, especially from the Nigerian defender.

Bassey slammed for ‘horrible’ defending

Bassey’s role in Ipswich’s first goal drew sharp criticism from fans and pundits alike following the 2-2 draw in London.

One fan on social media platform X described his clearance as “one of the worst attempted clearances I’ve seen in many a year,” while another stated, “Ipswich have scored after Calvin Bassey's leg unfortunately fell apart like a wet cake.”

Former Premier League midfielder Matt Holland echoed these sentiments, remarking, “Horrible moment for Calvin Bassey. First of all, the clearance and then the deflection off him into the back of the net. Don’t defend it well at all, Fulham.”

Despite earning a point, Fulham’s performance against a team battling relegation would have caused concerns for the Europe-chasing Cottagers, who will be keen to see better performances from Bassey at the back.
