Man United vs Chelsea: What happened
An inspired United side showed up at Old Trafford to put it arguably their best performance of the season so far to take all three points on offer.
Following the embarrassing defeat to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park at the weekend, the Red Devils needed a response and did not take time to make their intentions known.
The keenly anticipated encounter turned out to be a spectacle, with Ten Hag and his Reds sealing a much-needed win following a dominant display.
McTominay netted a goal each half to put United within touching distance of Champions League football, while Cole Palmer scored a consolation for the visitors, who were second-best from start to finish.
United’s approach
After the win, United’s hero on the day, McTominay, who has now scored five goals in the Premier League this season, explained how the Red Devils were able to contain Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues.
Speaking after the game, the 26-year-old noted that their performance on the day was down to their Dutch manager, Ten Hag.
“To be honest with you, the manager,” the Scottish midfielder said when asked about the key to United’s performance per United in Focus.
Ten Hag has come under heavy criticism this season for his decisions in the dugout and how United have approached matches this season.
But per McTominay, the former Ajax manager switched things up ahead of the decisive game against Chelsea.
“The way he approached this game. A lot of light training sessions, to keep us fresh," he added.
The result against Chelsea means United stay in the race for the Champions League, sitting sixth with 27 points in the Premier League standings.
