Why Rooney Onyango's impressive versatility and adaptability earned him a spot in Harambee Stars' national team, leaving coach Firat stunned.

Harambee Stars' head coach Engin Firat has revealed the reasons behind his admiration for Gor Mahia defender Rooney Onyango.

The 20-year-old talented player earned his first call-up to the national team in October and featured in the recent international friendly against Russia.

Onyango left a lasting impression on the coach, making him a strong contender for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and Seychelles.

A primarily a right-back, Onyango showcased his versatility during the match, impressively transitioning to play both as a right and left winger.

His adaptability, composure, and aggression when attacking spaces at pace caught the coach's eye, and he seamlessly adhered to Firat's tactical instructions throughout the game.

The friendly against Russia, which ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, was played in Antalya, Turkey on October 26.

"If I see a player and believe in his capacity, I am not afraid to invite him. When Rooney came, he surprised me. Why was he surprising? I had previously mentioned that local players often face challenges adapting to my training," Firat explained on Arocho Live.

"Rooney did not encounter any problems, and he adapted very well. He displayed his aggression on the field, and everything I said after the game confirmed my desire to have him, as I believe in this boy," he added.

Onyango's journey to national recognition has been a remarkable one, starting from his days with Wazito FC.

Known for his dynamic playstyle, he has consistently stood out as a player who can dominate the right flank, bombing up and down the pitch.

Denmark-based Daniel Anyembe had been a strong contender for the position but is currently sidelined with an injury, casting doubt on his availability for the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and Seychelles.

Meanwhile, midfielder Amos Nondi has also shown his ability to play in this position, further increasing the options available to the coach.
