Juventus have been hit with a 15-point deduction, here’s how it affects the Serie A table.
Juventus have been hit with a massive 15-point deduction by the Italian Football Federation (FGIC) for the Plusvalenza scandal.
The points deduction serves as a punishment for Juventus inflating transfer values and lying to financial officials in an attempt to save money.
This latest development changes things in the Serie A, not just for Juventus but the rest of the league as well, especially Victor Osimhen’s Napoli and Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta.
Juventus’ effect on the 2022/23 Serie A title race
As a result of the massive deduction, Juventus have now dropped from 3rd place, with 37 points, to 10th on the log with 22 points.
The Old Lady were putting together an unlikely title charge, 10 points behind table-topping Napoli until the deduction which now puts them 25 points behind.
This effectively ends Juventus’ already faint title hopes and confirms the Bianconneri will not be champions of Italy for the third consecutive season.
For Osimhen and Napoli, the title is certainly far from secured, this just means they have one less title contender to worry about.
The Neapolitans still remain favourites to win the league as they currently sit nine points ahead of AC Milan in second and 10 ahead of Inter who are now fourth following Juventus’ demotion.
Juventus’ effect on the 2022/23 Serie A top four race
The major impact of Juventus’ 15-point deduction is more visible in the top four race as up to six teams now realistically stand a chance of sealing Champions League football next season.
Napoli are so far ahead it is safe to assume they have secured one of the top four spots already, leaving AC Milan, Inter, Lazio, Atalanta and Roma to jostle for the remaining three slots with just four points separating all five teams.
Juventus dropping to 10th means Lazio are bumped up to fourth and swiftly followed by Lookman and Atalanta in fifth as well as Roma in sixth all tied on 34 points after 18 games.
The removal of Juve from the equation upgrades Atalanta’s chances of securing a top-four spot from outsiders to strong contenders.
As a result, Lookman could be in contention to play Champions League football next season while Osimhen is inched a bit closer to securing the Scudetto for Napoli this season.
Juventus have effectively gone from title contenders, almost guaranteed a top-four spot to a mid-table team.
