Arguably one of the best players to come out of the Express FC Junior Team, Hassan Mubiru, is now a player at rivals KCCA FC but how did he quickly move from Wankulukuku to Lugogo?

Mubiru was promoted to the Express senior team ahead of the 2022/23 season. From being an unused substitute, he started getting minutes off the bench and eventually started the last two games in the first round against Maroons FC and Blacks Power FC.

He was later summoned to the Uganda Hippos provisional squad ahead of the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt before he was dropped on the last day.

The Hippos first camped at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, and at this point, KCCA did not have any interest in Mubiru, according to a source that preferred anonymity.

"This deal has been quick because Morley Byekwaso (the KCCA head coach) only saw him a few weeks ago when the Hippos switched from Njeru to Lugogo," the source revealed to Pulse Sports

"Byekwaso was impressed with the player and had a chance to engage him one on one because he would see him every day at Lugogo."

"The player was then convinced to join KCCA, and he immediately requested to leave Express," the source added.

This reporter further understands that Mubiru had only six months left on his contract at Wankulukuku, and when interest came in from Lugogo with the help of his parents, he pushed hard for the exit.

Express was between a rock and a hard place and could not risk losing such a young prospect for nothing at the end of the season; they opted to sell for an undisclosed fee.

Mubiru was unveiled as the latest acquisition for the 13-time Uganda Premier League champions on Sunday, signing a five-year contract.

An effort to have a comment from Express CEO Isaac Mwesigwa about the matter was unsuccessful as he didn't pick up his phone or return our calls, not to mention ignoring our messages.
