The Super Eagles of Nigeria will miss football's global showpiece this number, but check out the incredible amount of money they could have cashed in if they qualified for the FIFA 2022 World Cup.
This year's FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar on 20 November and runs until 18 December, with the final takes place a week before Christmas, in Doha.
Amongst the other changes to this pros and cons of this year’e edition , there was also an increased budget which FIFA allocated to participating countries in November’s tournament.
This is also for a fact, the most expensive World Cup ever to be staged in the history of football.
As is tradition, there is always a large monetary incentive for lifting the FIFA World Cup and football clubs will also benefit while their players are involved in the competition.
This year Africa would be represented by Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia and Morocco after the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to qualify for November’s showpiece.
Nigeria missed out after failing to defeat Ghana in a two-legged jollof derby qualifier held earlier this year.
The Eagles played out a goalless draw in Kumasi before narrowly losing 1-0 to the Black Stars of Ghana in Abuja inn the reverse fixture.
Pulse Sports looks at just how much the Super Eagles could have now missed out on following their failure to qualify for this year’s winter World Cup.
How much did the Super Eagles miss out on following their 2022 World Cup absence?
As listed in the 2020 FIFA annual report, the total prize money pot for the 2022 World Cup stands at a whopping $440 million (N194.7 billion) - an obvious increase from the last tournament World Cup in Russia in 2018 which was $400 million (N177 billion).
To that effect, the Super Eagles could have received at least N657 million ($1.5 million) even before the competition starts. This money would have been paid to the team by FIFA just to cover the teams’ preparation costs.
And if the Super Eagles progress through the tournament, they even stand to receive larger sums of money, depending on where they finish.
How much of the prize money will the players get at the 2022 FIFA World Cup?
Usually, the prize money earned during the tournament is split between both the entire squad and other staff members.
Some amount of money also goes to charity and the National Football Association of that country.
However, there is no specified ratio to decide how much each individual player receives because FIFA allows each team to decide this themselves.
In many cases, all the players included in the squad will be paid the same amount, including players that don’t get much game time.
