The former Super Eagles shot-stopper recently shed light on how he survived one of the darkest periods in his life.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside, recently opened up on the harrowing personal challenges he faced off the pitch. 

The former Nigeria international who went on to become a pastor following his retirement from  professional football, shed light on the often-hidden struggles athletes endure.

After hanging his boots in 2002, Peterside’s life took a drastic turn when his wife left him, plunging him into a state of despair. 

The emotional toll was so severe that he contemplated suicide.

Peterside took to X formerly known as Twitter to make the candid revelation.

He said:  “I almost killed myself after my ex-wife left me, the shame was too much. I had just started a church and was just starting on SuperSport. Only God saw me through. I look back today and am very grateful to God.”

At the time, Peterside was beginning his journey as a pastor and television pundit, roles that demanded strength and composure. 

Yet, beneath the surface, he was battling an overwhelming sense of loss and shame.

 During his days as a footballer, Idah Peterside showcased his talents on both Nigerian and South African soil. 

In Nigeria, he played for clubs such as Enyimba, Sharks, Udoji United, BCC Lions, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now known as Heartland FC. 

His journey took him to South Africa, where he played for Tembisa Classic FC and Moroka Swallows.

Peterside also made history as the first Nigerian football pundit on DSTV, bringing his insights and expertise to a broader audience.

 His spiritual journey began in 1996 while still with Iwuanyanwu Nationale, during which he pursued a diploma from Word of Faith Bible College, balancing his academic pursuits with his football career.

Today, Peterside is now a pastor at Christ Ambassadors Church in South Africa.

He played for the Super Eagles from 1998 and was last called up in 2001.
