Cole Palmer explained that he was not initially open to leaving Manchester City for Chelsea.

Contrary to the popular belief that Cole Palmer forced a move to Chelsea due to his frustration with his game time at Manchester City, the England international revealed he did not want to join the London side and was persuaded.

Palmer to Chelsea

The 22-year-old joined Chelsea at the start of the 2022/23 season for a £42 million guaranteed fee. The deal, initially criticised, as it continued the trend of the Blues hierarchy splashing on prospects, could not go down as one of the biggest transfer-led turning points in Premier League history.

Palmer has set the league alight with Chelsea is an understatement. In his first season, he registered 33 goals or assists in the Premier League alone, and at the end of the season, despite Chelsea's failings, Palmer swept many relevant awards

What Palmer said

However, last season could have gone entirely different for the midfielder, as, in his interview with British GQ, where he was featured alongside Manchester United’s Cole Palmer, he revealed that he was not initially open to the idea of joining Chelsea.

He explained that he had to be persuaded, and when the negotiations dragged on, it weighed on his mind and left him anxious.

“I wasn’t even gonna go (to) Chelsea,” Palmer said to British GQ. “I got persuaded. Every time the ball went out I’d ask the kit man or the doctor if they’ve agreed the fee yet,” Palmer added before revealing he didn’t get the chance at a proper farewell.

“Most people went home,” he said. “I messaged the group chat, said, ‘Thanks and everything. I’m gone.’ That was it.”
