Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has been forced to retire at 31 due to a serious injury.

World Cup winner with France Raphael Varane has decided to leave the game that brought him fame and glory, announcing his retirement at the age of 31 due to a serious injury.

Varane confirmed his retirement in a statement following the serious injuries that have limited his game time in recent years.

The defender recently joined newly promoted Como from Manchester United on a free transfer but has struggled to stay fit.

"They say all good things must come to an end," Varane said in his retirement statement. "In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime."

Varane expressed immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment as he reflected on his illustrious career, which saw him win numerous trophies with Real Madrid, Man United and the World Cup with France.

However, the defender felt the time was right to retire, stating he wants to "go out strong, not just holding on to the game."

Varane won the UCL with Real Madrid multiple times.

"It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct," Varane continued.

"Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it's the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley."

Varane thanked the supporters of every club he played for, his teammates, coaches, and staff, expressing his gratitude for making his journey more special than his "wildest dreams could ever foresee."

He, however, confirmed that he will remain with Como, but in a non-playing capacity, as he embarks on a new chapter off the pitch.

"I will remain with Como," he added. "Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon."
