Victor Osimhen reveals his doubters have helped him form a strong mentality in a bid to prove them wrong
Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has credited his doubters for his success so far with his drive to prove them wrong and to do "better than they expected."
Osimhen made the admission while reminiscing about his journey so far in an interview with Nigerian sports journalist and content creator Oma Akatugba.
The 24-year-old has been enjoying the best season of his career so far with 14 goals in 16 Serie A games for Napoli and his form has drawn mainstream attention to the player.
Osimhen speaks on his career so far
When asked if he has surpassed his career expectations so far, Osimhen replied affirmatively and said he owed it all to God.
“For me, more than a 100 per cent, more like a 1001 per cent," Osimhen said in response to the question on surpassing his target as a footballer so far.
Osimhen continued "I set a standard for myself, the kind of life I want to live and even when things were not going so well for me I kept on believing, dreaming, praying and working hard, doing all sorts of jobs before I went back to my real love, football."
Osimhen's source of motivation
“There was a lot of obstacles along the way to get to where I am today. A lot of hate, backstabbing, and also love. I attribute my success to a lot of love, pain, tears, failures," Osimhen said.
The 24-year-old had a difficult upbringing which he alludes to in the interview and claimed it to be his main source of motivation.
“There was a lot of obstacles along the way to get to where I am today. A lot of hate, backstabbing, and also love. I attribute my success to a lot of love, pain, tears, failures," the Napoli star continued.
He went on to reveal his source of motivation, "Many didn’t believe I could make it, they said I wouldn’t survive two years. I was laughed at when two clubs rejected me in Belgium, but I never allowed all those get to me."
Osimhen's success story
As his first name implies, Victor has gone on to overcome the early challenges faced and prove the doubters wrong as he alluded to in this interview.
“You either take it like they have said it or you prove them absolutely wrong. God so good I have proved them wrong," Osimhen said before going on to justify the statement.
"I’m playing in one of the best clubs in Europe, I have been nominated for the youth player of the year, I have won so many personal awards for myself, which I feel is a huge milestone for me, considering the fact that I’ve gone through a lot of life-threatening issues, I came back and I’m doing quite well for myself," Osimhen rounded up.
The Nigerian is right in his assessment of himself proving his doubters wrong as only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland has scored more goals than him in Europe's top five leagues.
