I hope they lose more — Ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid star speaks against Osimhen's Galatasaray

Faruq Ibrahim 15:59 - 04.03.2025

Former Arsenal star backed Fenerbahce in the title race against Osimhen's Galatasaray.

Renowned football journeyman Nicolas Anelka recently weighed in on the heated title race in Turkey between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

Anelka, 45, and since retired, played for a number of top football clubs in the world, including but not limited to Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Despite his association with many top sides, Anelka’s one-year stint at Fenerbahce left an imprint on him, and he is an active follower of the club till date—he left the club in 2006.

What Anelka said

While he lives in Dubai, Anelka said he travelled to Paris to watch Fenerbahce Beko, their basketball team, beat Paris Basketball. Speaking at the event, he expressed his commitment to the Fenerbahce organisation and weighed in on the Super Lig title race.

“Seeing Fenerbahçe play always makes me happy. I follow Fenerbahçe in football as well. Today, I follow Fenerbahçe in basketball,” Anelka said, per Ntvspor

"I think Fenerbahçe played well. You have a good coach. There will be a great fight between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray.

"I saw Galatasaray lose points over the weekend. Hopefully Galatasaray will lose more points and Fenerbahçe will continue to win their matches. Why not? Maybe they will become champions at the end of the season.

"I still love the fans in Türkiye very much. Especially Fenerbahçe fans. I miss them very much. I hope to see you in Türkiye as soon as possible."

Title race in Turkey

Galatasaray threatened to run away with the title earlier in the season, but Jose Mourinho's side have clawed back the margin to only four points.

The momentum is on Fenerbahce's side, evident in the 0-0 Istanbul derby draw last week, in which the Yellow Canaries played better than Okan Buruk's Galatasaray.

The Cim-Bom cannot afford to drop more points like Anelka wishes, as Fenerbahce seem unstoppable at the moment. After exiting Europe, Galatasaray would hope fighting on both fronts would slow down Fenerbahce in the league.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Europa League clash between Fenerbahce and Rangers, Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun sang the praises of Jose Mourinho
