One of Arsenal's biggest legends has opened up on his decision to quit Highbury.

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has confessed that one of his biggest career regrets was leaving North London "for a woman."

The World Cup winner, who became a cult hero at Arsenal, left the club after three seasons, despite being first-choice in defensive midfield.

Petit worked with Arsene Wenger when he was manager at Monaco, and one year after Wenger was appointed Arsenal boss, he brought the French midfielder to North London.

The pair won a Premier League title and an FA Cup, with Petit also lifting the World Cup with France during his three-year stint in the capital.

Petit on leaving Arsenal for a woman

In a recent interview, Petit reflected on his decision to leave Arsenal for Barcelona in 2000.

When asked why he left, Petit told Stadium Astro:

"For a woman. I always loved Barcelona and [Real] Madrid, two of the biggest clubs in the world. But I should have stayed with Arsenal, definitely.

"You know, sometimes the grass is not greener somewhere else. It's better to stay where you are when you receive love and happiness and you are successful.

"Why would you leave? Definitely [a big regret]. If I could turn the clock back, I would probably make a different decision."

Petit struggled in his sole season at Barcelona, before moving to Chelsea where he played for three seasons before hanging up his boots.
