As his reputation continues to soar, inevitable comparisons to Barcelona's greatest-ever player, Lionel Messi, have begun to surface, especially after also taking over the Argentine's former number.

When asked about these comparisons, Yamal responded with a mix of humility and ambition:

Lionel Messi rose to prominence when he produced a stunning performance for Barcelona against Juventus in the Gamper back in 2005.

"I like being compared to the best in history, Leo Messi," Yamal told El Hormiguero, as reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

"But I want to be Lamine Yamal and reaching Messi's level is impossible."
