He was named on Marcelo Bielsa’s side for this September's international break. In a press conference, he tearily announced that he would retire from Uruguay duty after the match against Venezuela on September 9th.
What Suarez said
"There is no better pride in oneself than knowing when the right moment to retire is and luckily I am confident that I am retiring from the national team because I want to take a step aside," Suarez announces.
"I am 37 years old and I know that it is very difficult to get to the next World Cup. It comforts me a lot that I can retire and not for my injuries to retire me or to stop being called up.
"For me individually, it is very helpful for me to want to take that step aside and feel ready. It is difficult because the decision was not easy. But I go with the peace of mind that until the last game I gave my all and that the flame did not burn out slowly and that is why I made the decision that it should be now."
He made his debut for Uruguay 17 years ago. Since then, he has racked up 142 appearances and scored 69 goals, which fixes him as La Celeste's all-time top scorer.
Messi's reaction
Messi and Suarez have a strong relationship on and off the pitch. They first became teammates when the Uruguayan joined Barcelona in 2014 and reunited earlier in the year after Suarez joined his best mate at Inter Miami.
After Suarez announced his international retirement, his career was celebrated by all and sundry, with football personalities taking to social media to commemorate the occasion. Messi did not miss out on the wishes, as he shared the following on social media: "You are unique, @luissuarez9, on and off the pitch!!! I love you very much."
With Messi out injured, Suarez has ensured Inter Miami stay top of the MLS standings. Pulse Sports reported that the 37-year-old has returned to training and should return to action later in the month.
