Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal explains his decision to pick Spain over Morocco.

Barcelona's youngster, Lamine Yamal, who was eligible to play for Morocco and Spain, has come out to explain that he never planned on playing for the North African national, contrary to multiple reports.

The 16-year-old is currently partaking in the European Championships with Spain and has been one of the best performers for La Roja. In a recent interview ahead of the Round of 16 fixture against Georgia, he stated that he had only ever dreamt of playing for Spain.

Yamal and Morocco

Yamal is the son of African immigrants in Spain: his father is a Moroccan, and his mother is from Equatorial Guinea.

This meant he was eligible for either of those teams, but it was the Royal Moroccan Football Federation that truly pushed him to acquire his talents before he eventually declared for the country of his birth, Spain.

Morocco’s pursuit was serious, which helped paint a picture of a big decision for the youngster to make. However, Lamine has come to explain that he never considered the World Cup semi-finalists.

It has always been Spain — Yamal

The Barcelona academy graduate was born and bred in Spain and has represented the Iberian country across various age grades as part of the La Roja contingent at the last U-17 tournament.

As such, he never considered representing another country, according to him. “That debate was created by the media. I always knew what I wanted, and there was no doubt. I wanted to play in the Euro Cup and the World Cup, which I could only do with Spain. It’s clear now; I’m very happy,” the electric winger said, Barca Buzz.

Yamal has played all three games for Spain at the Euros so far, starting two and coming on as a substitute in the third. He is expected to retain his prominence in the coming knockout clashes.
