Chelsea ahead of schedule
After a dismal past two seasons that saw a managerial overturn at the level associated with the Roman Abramovich era and a youth-obsessed transfer policy, one cannot be faulted for writing off Chelsea this season.
However, they are currently flying in the Premier League and Conference League. As stated earlier, they find themselves in third place, above Manchester City and level on points with Arsenal, the two most dominant sides in the EPL in those two years of Chelsea's struggle under Clearlake ownership.
However, Enzo Maresca, the Blues boss who took over in the summer after the inexplicable termination of Mauricio Pochettino, is not getting carried away. He believes they are ahead of schedule and still cannot compete with the best teams in the league.
What Gary Neville said
Gary Neville shares this sentiment and, in fact, bases his analysis on that idea. Speaking on his eponymous podcast, Neville acknowledged Chelsea's form but believes title contention might be too soon for them.
“To be honest, it feels too early for Chelsea. Even though they're level on points [with Arsenal],” Neville said.
“It doesn't feel as though Chelsea will go and win it. I still feel it's going to be Arsenal, if anybody, who will catch Liverpool in this moment in time.
“But you're right, Chelsea are having a fantastic season. Maresca has got a stability there that's been difficult to find—so well done to them. The Cole Palmer goal was absolutely wonderful. But I don't feel like they're there for the title. I don't sense it really.”
