Not Nigeria! Super Eagles legend Nwankwo Kanu makes bold pick for AFCON 2025 winner
Nigerian football great Kanu Nwankwo refused to back the Super Eagles for the AFCON 2025 title.
He was handed the Number 10 jersey ahead of the clash against Libya yesterday, and although he was not named from the start, he came on to heroic effect.
What Bashiru said
A number 10 scoring big goals for the Super Eagles reminded Nigerians of the legendary Jay Jay Okocha, and they wasted no time drawing comparisons between players.
The Number 10 jersey, as in many countries, is revered and following Okocha’s reign, John Obi-Mikel was another star who donned the number.
Bashiru was asked how he felt about towing the lines of such colossal legends, and he played it cool. Although admitting the significance of the kit number, he believes it bears little to no extra weight.
“Me personally, I don’t really like to think too much about the number I am wearing,” he said after the game. “Whether it is number 10, number 80, or anything. My main focus is to give 100 percent on the pitch and to perform to the best of my ability.
“I don’t really mind. Of course, I understand it’s a number that has a lot of weight behind it. But, I think the main thing is giving 100 percent on the pitch.”
