I wish I was signed for €20m — Nicolas Pepe regrets joining Arsenal as a record signing

Ex-Arsenal star Nicolas Pepe lamented about how his price tag impacted how he was treated at Arsenal.

Ivory Coast international Nicolas Pepe reflects on his time at Arsenal again and accuses his high price tag for how negatively things went for him.

Pepe, 29, joined Arsenal in the summer of 2019 for a club-record transfer fee after a sensational season with Ligue 1 side Lille. However, he failed to live up to the €80 million price tag shelled out to acquire his talent.

The Ivorian was eventually released from his Arsenal contract, and after one season at Turkish side Trabzonspor, he is a free agent once again.

What Pepe said

In an interview with BBC Sport, Pepe explained how his price tag meant he had no time to settle into the Premier League before he was expected to deliver.

The former OGC Nice forward thought he needed to be eased into things and that if he cost less, instead of the club record fee required to bring him in, Arsenal could have afforded him more leeway.

“No, it's not that. It’s the price tag,” Pepe told the BBC. For example, if Arsenal had bought me for €20 million. Maybe it would have been different. Maybe, they would have spent more time on me, built up my confidence and prepared me for playing in the Premier League.”

Pepe has been reflecting on his failed spell at Arsenal in recent weeks. Before the interview with BBC Sport, the Ivorian told L’Equipe he came close to quitting football, as his time with the Gunners had impacted him negatively
