Spanish national team manager Luis De La Fuente envisages a new role for Barcelona's star midfielder.

Spanish national team coach Luis De La Fuente has explained that midfielder Pedri will play a different role under him than he does at Barcelona.

Pedri, 21, has been a main fixture in Barcelona’s midfield since joining the club from Las Palmas in the summer of 2020. The Canary Island star is a ball-dominant midfielder who is typically involved in the second phase of play; however, Fuente wants to operate differently for Spain.

What Fuente said

The 62-year-old tactician deployed Pedri in an advanced role in the 5-0 victory over Andorra and the 5-1 victory over Northern Ireland. It was a role in which the Barcelona midfielder was not required to be involved on the ball; instead, he was tasked with crashing the box and linking up play in the final third.

He touched the ball only 48 times in 62 minutes against Andorra, a figure that tanked significantly in the triumph over the British nation, where he touched the ball only 17 times in 61 minutes.

However, Pedri was effective in the opposition box, scoring his first goal for Spain with his brace against the Green and White Army. Fuente, according to GFNS, wants to continue using Pedri in this role, “I want Pedri to play closer to the penalty box. What I’m asking him to do is different than what he does for his club.”

Meanwhile, incoming Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has reportedly mentioned that Pedri will be one of the pillars of his squad.
