Wayne Rooney has supported Trent Alexander-Arnold's potential move to Real Madrid, stating it would be a huge opportunity despite fan backlash over his possible Liverpool exit.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been making headlines in recent days following his alleged move to Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old will be out of contract at the end of the season and there are no discussions surrounding the renewal of the same with Liverpool, hence the decision for him to move to Real Madrid on a free transfer, something that has irked fans.

However, another legend, who understands how transfers work, Wayne Rooney, has backed Trent to make the bold move if that is what he wants.

As quoted by BBC Sport, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney noted that it would be a crucial decision to make but it is all for his good. He revealed that Trent has a choice to play for Liverpool for the rest of his career or move to Real Madrid, the biggest club in the world right now.

“It would be a massive opportunity and I'd understand if he felt it was too good to turn down. Liverpool are his boyhood club, so I can understand why leaving them is more of a dilemma, but sometimes as a player you have to make these decisions about where your future lies,” Wayne Rooney said.

He went down memory lane to when he used to play for Manchester United in 2010 and did not want to renew his contract.

Wayne Rooney revealed that he received requests from three clubs, Chelsea, Real and Barcelona and he already knew where he wanted to go, Spain.

He added that he wanted to play for Barcelona and was looking forward to play with the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Sergio Busquets.

“In the end, I decided to stay at United, but Barca had an incredible team then and any player would have loved to have played in it,” he added.

“Real are the same now with superstars like Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr, so of course it must be appealing to Alexander-Arnold to think about playing alongside them - anyone would feel the same.”

Wayne Rooney explained that whatever decision Trent Alexander-Arnold makes, he would not be disappointed since he has been down that road.

He added that it might be time for him to make a change owing to the fact that he has won every domestic trophy with Liverpool.

“I don't think anyone could say that's the reason Alexander-Arnold would want to leave Liverpool, because they are on the verge of winning the Premier League,” Wayne Rooney shared.

“If he goes to Real he would be very likely to enjoy even more success in a different country - and have the challenge of not just winning more trophies, but different ones.”

Wayne Rooney noted that Alexander-Arnold Trent leaving the club on a free transfer has also annoyed fans but the decision lies with Liverpool.
