Brazilian legend Marta will play into her 40’s after extending her deal with NWSL club Orlando Pride.

Brazilian superstar Marta has silenced retirement rumours by signing a two-year contract extension with Orlando Pride, the NWSL club announced on Thursday.

The 38-year-old forward, widely considered one of the greatest women's footballers of all time, had previously indicated she would no longer participate in the World Cup and Olympics.

However, she remains committed to playing at the club level, much to the delight of Orlando fans.

Dramatically adding to the announcement, fireworks erupted behind her as she declared that she was ‘staying at home’.

What Martha said

"It's been the honour of a lifetime to represent this community, to be your captain and to bring the first-ever league championship to the city of Orlando. I'm staying home!" Marta said in a video posted to social media.

Marta's decision comes after a successful 2024 season. She was instrumental in leading the Pride to their first NWSL championship, notching 11 goals along the way.

Additionally, she helped Brazil clinch a third Olympic silver medal in Paris last year.

Marta's talent was a top priority - Pride Sporting Director

Pride Sporting Director Haley Carter in a statement said retaining Marta's talent was a top priority for the club.

"The impact she has made on our team, our locker room and our community is evident, of course through her incredible skill as a player, but even more so through her selfless and exemplary leadership style," he said.

Marta holds the record for most World Cup finals goals with 17. This new contract extension ensures fans can continue to witness her exceptional skills for at least the next two years.
