In a historic moment for African football, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was in attendance as the African Football League, AFL, made its much-anticipated debut in Tanzania.
The spotlight shone brightly on the continent as the passionate supporters, iconic teams and an electrifying atmosphere converged for the tournament’s opener between Simba SC and Al Ahly on Friday night.

Okonjo-Iweala highlights football as a tool for trade and women’s empowerment
Okonjo-Iweala joined the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) during Making Trade Score for Women!, a series of panel discussions held at the WTO’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland where she spoke alongside FIFA President, Mr Gianni Infantino.

The President led a delegation from the governing body which included former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, and famous Italian referee, Pierluigi Collina, who is the chairman of the body’s Referees’ Committee.
The presence of FIFA’s highest authority at the heart of African football sent a powerful message about the significance of the African Football League, AFL.
Infantino, known for his commitment to the development of the game at a global level, was happy to be in the State capital, Dar es Salaam, where he also discussed the development of football in the country.
“I am pleased to be in Dar es Salaam for the launch of the new African Football League,” Infantino stated per Inside FIFA. “I am also discussing football development with the Tanzania Football Federation President, Wallace Karia, who is welcoming us so well here, and other African Federations presidents,” he added.
The AFL is a competition that came to be following a partnership between FIFA and CAF. In its debut season, the AFL will see eight teams compete for honours, with the tournament set to expand to 24 teams in 2024.
Nigeria’s Enyimba, who are two-time CAF Champions League winners, will flag the country’s flag, with the People’s Elephant expected to kick off their campaign on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the opening game of the competition saw fireworks as the home side, Simba, and Ahly played out a four-goal thriller.
The encounter between the two teams was an end-to-end stuff that was shown live by FIFA on their FIFA Plus channel, where fans across the world can follow other matches.

The inaugural match was also watched by a full-capacity crowd in Tanzania. AFL, with its array of talents, is poised to further solidify Africa’s place on the global footballing stage.
