Injury-stricken Arsenal suffer late goal in Liverpool draw as they go farther off title race

Arsenal failed to capitalise on their one-goal lead as Liverpool held the Gunners to a draw at the Emirate.

The Gunners were looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth last weekend.

However, Mikel Arteta’s men were held by Arne Slot’s side in a 2-2 draw as the title race continued to heat up.

As it happened

Bukayo Saka returned to the starting lineup after missing Arsenal’s last two games due to injury. Mikel Arteta has also named Jurrien Timber, who also returned from injury following  William Saliba’s suspension.

Alex Mac Allister came in to start for Liverpool, while Darwin Nunez is named up front with Diogo Jota missing through injury.

Both teams started the game cautiously, but it was Arsenal who struck the first blow to take the lead.

Bukayo Saka latched onto a long ball forward, which has Andy Robertson struggling. The winger then stepped past Robertson and lashed the ball into the net, but the lead did not last as Liverpool pegged the Gunners back from a corner kick.

Luis Dias nodded the ball back from the near post and Virgil Van Dijk met the ball with his head to slot home the equaliser.

Just a few minutes before the halftime whistle, the Gunners got the lead again from a perfect inswinger freekick.

Declan Rice's free-kick fell perfectly for Mikel Merino’s path to power a header past Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher.

The second half started and Liverpool pushed forward for the equaliser but had to wait till the 80th minute.

A delicious pass forward by Trent Alexander-Arnold finds Darwin Nunez inside the box, who does well to lay it into the path of the advancing Mohamed Salah.

Both teams held on, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw and Arsenal five points behind league leaders Manchester City.
